Gill Locked Up for Gun Crime After Meth, Stolen Pistol Bust

A West Virginia man is facing the consequences of his actions after being caught with a stolen pistol, methamphetamine, and a shotgun during a traffic stop.

David Nelson Gill, 32, of Hinton, was sentenced to one year and six months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The sentence was handed down by Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. after Gill pleaded guilty to the charges.

According to court documents, on February 6, 2023, Gill was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over by law enforcement in St. Albans. During the stop, officers found a loaded Taurus Model PT111 9mm pistol, which was later determined to be stolen, and a loaded Remington Model 870 12-gauge shotgun on the vehicle’s rear passenger seat floor.

Additionally, officers found approximately 3 grams of methamphetamine on Gill’s person after his arrest.

Gill admitted to possessing the loaded pistol and was aware that he was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his prior felony conviction for grand larceny in Summers County Circuit Court on August 11, 2017.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office praised the investigative work of the St. Albans Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the country.

The program focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in the community, supporting community-based organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.

Gill’s case is a prime example of the consequences of violating federal laws and the importance of community-based initiatives in reducing crime.

A copy of the press release is available on the U.S. Attorney’s Office website for the Southern District of West Virginia, and related court documents can be found on PACER by searching for Case No. 2:23-cr-75.
