KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In a gritty federal court victory for law enforcement, Terrell M. Simpson, 42, was today found guilty of illegal firearm possession in Kansas City.
Simpson’s conviction stems from an incident on May 11, 2020, where police pulled over his vehicle. During the stop, officers discovered a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun hidden in plain sight, with DNA evidence linking Simpson to the weapon.
With two prior felony convictions for drug trafficking and possession of a controlled substance, Simpson’s current charges were no surprise. He also has convictions for domestic assault and armed criminal action under his belt.
The jury at the U.S. District Court in Kansas City deliberated for two hours before returning a guilty verdict to Chief District Judge Beth Phillips.
Under federal law, Simpson faces up to 10 years in prison without parole. His sentencing will be determined by the court after a presentence investigation.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing gun violence and making neighborhoods safer. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stefan C. Hughes and Stephanie Bradshaw prosecuted the case, with investigations led by the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department and the ATF.
