Orange County, CA – A dramatic tale of crime and recidivism emerged this week as Eric Walter Gray, 53, was indicted for robbing a bank in Anaheim just one day after his release from prison.
In a shocking turn of events, the federal grand jury in California returned an indictment against Gray for one count of bank robbery and forced accompaniment. Since June 5, Gray has been in federal custody following his transfer from state to federal custody. A federal magistrate judge ordered him held without bond.
Gray’s arraignment is set for June 24 in the United States District Court in Santa Ana. His swift return to criminal activity underscores the gravity of the charges against him. ‘One day after his release from prison, this defendant allegedly chose to return to crime by taking three victims hostage while he robbed a bank,’ said United States Attorney Martin Estrada.
According to court documents, Gray robbed the BMO bank branch in Anaheim on May 8, demanding money at gunpoint and holding the bank manager for an hour. The FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, working with local and federal law enforcement, played a crucial role in the investigation and rescue of the hostages.
Following his arrest, Gray fought with police, resulting in injuries to officers. ‘I am incredibly proud of our Officers as they risked their lives to bring this volatile incident to a safe resolution,’ said Anaheim Police Chief Rick P. Armendariz.
Gray faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of 20 years if convicted. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office charged Gray, but dismissed their case to allow the federal case to proceed. This incident highlights Operation Safe Cities’ focus on prosecuting recidivists engaged in dangerous conduct.
