Tyler Gunman Ocampo-Mondragon Gets 18 Months

TYLER, TEXAS – Another illegal alien caught packing heat in East Texas is heading to federal prison. Tomas Ocampo-Mondragon, 37, a citizen of Mexico, received an 18-month sentence on July 10, 2025, after pleading guilty to being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm. The case underscores the ongoing struggle to stem the flow of weapons into the hands of those unlawfully present in the United States.

The trouble began August 5, 2024, when Smith County deputies pulled Ocampo-Mondragon over for a traffic violation. It quickly became clear this wasn’t a routine stop. Deputies determined Ocampo-Mondragon was intoxicated and placed him under arrest. A search revealed a loaded firearm tucked away in his pocket, immediately escalating the charges.

But this wasn’t Ocampo-Mondragon’s first brush with the law. Investigators dug deeper and discovered he was previously found unlawfully present in the U.S. back on September 14, 2019, in Las Cruces, New Mexico – and he was also carrying a firearm at that time. He voluntarily returned to Mexico on January 3, 2020, but illegally re-entered the country without authorization. This pattern of disregard for U.S. law clearly influenced U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker’s sentencing decision.

Federal prosecutors highlighted Ocampo-Mondragon’s repeated violations during the sentencing hearing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble successfully argued for a substantial prison term, emphasizing the danger posed by individuals illegally possessing firearms. The 18-month sentence sends a clear message: those who break the law and endanger public safety will face serious consequences.

This case is being touted as a victory for “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative spearheaded by the Department of Justice. The operation aims to combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect communities from violent crime. It funnels resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) into targeted enforcement efforts.

The investigation was a collaborative effort involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Department of Homeland Security, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. While one gunman is off the streets, the fight against illegal weapons and immigration continues. Grimy Times will continue to track these cases and expose the truth behind the headlines.
