United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell dropped a hammer today, announcing the sentencing of Ubaldo Balderrama-Marquez for his role in a ruthless drug trafficking operation. The 59-year-old man from Chihuahua, Mexico, faced Judge Karen E. Schreier, who delivered a three-year and one-month federal prison term on July 11, 2025.
Balderrama-Marquez was indicted back in November 2006 for Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance. His plea of guilty this April marked the end of a long-running saga that saw him and his brothers, Jose, Miguel, and Rafael Balderrama-Marquez, selling massive quantities of cocaine and marijuana out of Denver, Colorado.
Their targets? Ken Walking Eagle, John Ladeaux, and others who would distribute the drugs in South Dakota and on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This was no amateur operation; it was a well-organized conspiracy that struck fear into the hearts of law enforcement and community leaders alike.
But justice finally caught up with the Balderrama-Marquez brothers. The Badlands Safe Trails Task Force, a collaboration between FBI agents, Bureau of Indian Affairs officers, Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, and South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation personnel, cracked this drug ring wide open. Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward C. Tarbay led the prosecution with unwavering determination.
Upon his sentencing, Balderrama-Marquez was immediately handed over to the U.S. Marshals Service for custody, a stark reminder that no matter how far he ran, justice always finds its way home. And as part of his sentence, he must cough up $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, which is a pittance but a mandatory fee for every federal criminal.
The grim truth is that drug trafficking cases like this are all too common in our communities. The sentences handed down today send a strong message that there will be no sanctuary for those who peddle death and destruction on the streets of America.
