South Bend’s grim streets have once again seen justice served as Armon Shannon, 24 years of age, was found guilty by a jury on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The conviction comes after a spirited two-day trial before United States District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty.
Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor announced the verdict, with sentencing scheduled for October 30, 2025, a date that will mark Shannon’s next journey through the criminal justice system.
The investigation into Shannon was a collaborative effort, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) with support from the South Bend Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Joel Gabrielse and Joseph P. Falvey prosecuted the case with relentless dedication to the law.
This conviction is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that unites all levels of law enforcement with their communities in the fight against violent crime and gun violence. The Department launched a strategic initiative on May 26, 2021, focusing on fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, and measuring results to make neighborhoods safer.
The PSN initiative is grounded in core principles that emphasize building legitimacy within communities, providing support to those who prevent violence before it happens, setting enforcement priorities with a strategic focus, and evaluating the effectiveness of their efforts.
As South Bend grapples with its crime challenges, Shannon’s conviction stands as a testament to the tireless work of law enforcement in making the community safer for all.
