PENSACOLA, FL – In a brutal display of the Department of Justice’s zero-tolerance stance on violent crime, Brandon Martez Black, 27, has been handed a 100-month sentence for possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, John P. Heekin, announced the sentence.
Black’s crime spree began on June 8, 2024, when he attempted to flee from officers with the Florida Highway Patrol during a traffic stop. After a high-speed pursuit, Black abandoned his vehicle and took off on foot, discarding a loaded Glock .40 caliber pistol into a residential backyard. The firearm was later recovered by law enforcement.
“Operation Take Back America is a promise to our communities,” Heekin emphasized. “Keeping repeat offenders like Brandon Martez Black off the streets is exactly what this initiative stands for.”
The case against Black was a collaborative effort between the Florida Highway Patrol, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey M. Tharp handled the prosecution.
Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative led by the Department of Justice, aims to dismantle transnational criminal organizations and protect communities from violent crime. The Northern District of Florida’s U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all citizens.
