JACKSONVILLE, FL – Aidan Francis Akins, 31, of Jacksonville, Florida, will spend the next decade in federal prison after being sentenced for receiving and possessing horrific child sexual abuse materials (CSAM). U.S. District Judge Wendy W. Berger handed down the 10-year sentence following Akins’ guilty plea on October 2, 2024. The case rips open another wound in the ongoing epidemic of child exploitation, revealing the dark underbelly of online depravity.
The investigation, spearheaded by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Jacksonville, began in April 2023. An undercover operation on a social media chat application flagged a user actively selling CSAM. The trail quickly led to Akins, identified as a purchaser of these vile materials. Authorities weren’t dealing with a passive viewer; Akins was financially supporting the creation and distribution of abuse.
On June 16, 2023, HSI agents executed a federal search warrant at Akins’ residence. Confronted with the evidence, Akins didn’t bother with denials. He freely admitted to contacting an individual offering CSAM and confirmed multiple purchases. When asked about the presence of such material on his phone, Akins chillingly responded, “Yes, there may still be some in there, yes.” He acknowledged the illegality of possessing and viewing CSAM, admitting to indulging in this horrific content roughly every 2 to 4 weeks.
“The possession, trading, and viewing of child sexual abuse material from the darkest corners of the internet, makes these child predators complicit in the ongoing victimization of children,” stated Homeland Security Investigation Jacksonville Assistant Special Agent in Charge Tim Hemker. “HSI, alongside our state and local partners, are committed to protecting children, hold their offenders accountable, and stop the cycle of harm these images perpetuate forever.” Hemker’s statement underscores the gravity of these crimes – it’s not just about possession, it’s about perpetuating abuse.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Northeast Florida INTERCEPT Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney Ashley Washington skillfully prosecuted the case, securing a sentence that, while insufficient to undo the harm, sends a message that such behavior will not be tolerated. This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project focuses on identifying, rescuing, and prosecuting those who prey on children.
Project Safe Childhood, led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, pools federal, state, and local resources. Those seeking more information about Project Safe Childhood can visit www.justice.gov/psc. But the fight doesn’t end with arrests and convictions. It demands a constant, unwavering commitment to protecting the most vulnerable among us.
