Austin, Texas – In a stunning turn of justice, Nicholas Keith Bonneville, 25, from Leander, Texas, was sentenced on Friday to 37 months in federal prison for orchestrating a wire fraud scheme that resulted in the loss of approximately $1 million. The defendant, who promised his victims untold wealth through foreign exchange trading, has been exposed as a fraudulent con artist.
Court documents reveal that Bonneville convinced over 100 unsuspecting victims to invest in his so-called investment schemes, falsely claiming he would match their investments dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000. In one chilling instance, the defendant claimed to have turned an initial investment of $50,000 into a mind-boggling $1 million in less than a year—approximately 2,000% return on investment. However, a thorough review of Bonneville’s bank records confirmed that the money was used for personal expenses and to repay other victims, not for foreign exchange trading as he had promised.
Bonneville was nabbed by the FBI in February and charged with one count of wire fraud. On May 15, he pleaded guilty to the charge. U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman did not mince words, ordering Bonneville to serve over three years behind bars and pay $575,450.30 in restitution to his victims.
U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas announced the sentence, emphasizing the severity of the crime and the impact on the victims. The FBI played a crucial role in investigating the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Harding prosecuted it with unwavering determination.
This sentence sends a stark reminder that such fraudulent activities will not go unpunished. As the justice system continues to crack down on financial crimes, Bonneville’s sentence serves as a cautionary tale for those who would seek to exploit the trust of innocent people.
