Truck Attack on HSI Agent: Illegal Immigrant Indicted

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Cristian Geovanni Rojas Benitez, 37, a Mexican national living in the United States illegally, is facing federal charges after allegedly using his pickup truck as a weapon against a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent. The incident, a brazen attempt to evade federal custody, unfolded in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, on June 23, 2025, and culminated in a nationwide manhunt.

According to an indictment unsealed today, United States Attorney David Metcalf announced that Rojas Benitez is charged with forcibly assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, intimidating, and interfering with a federal officer while employing a deadly weapon – his full-size pickup truck. The agent was actively performing official duties at the time of the attack, and the charges carry significant penalties if convicted.

Federal agents, including HSI, were attempting to locate Rojas Benitez to take him into administrative custody due to violations of his release conditions pending removal proceedings. Surveillance led them to a Downingtown residence where, at approximately 8:30 a.m., a man matching Rojas Benitez’s description exited and entered a pickup truck. A traffic stop was initiated as the truck began to drive away, but Rojas Benitez refused to comply with repeated orders to exit the vehicle or lower his window.

As the situation escalated, the HSI agent approached the truck to maintain visual contact with the driver. After multiple warnings, a federal officer broke the rear driver’s side window in an attempt to gain compliance. Instead, court filings allege, Rojas Benitez put the truck in drive and intentionally drove onto the sidewalk, directly towards the agent. The agent was forced to push off the vehicle and jump clear to avoid being struck, narrowly escaping serious injury. The out-of-control truck also nearly collided with a passing school bus, putting countless children at risk.

Rojas Benitez didn’t stop there. He fled Pennsylvania, leading to a coordinated effort by the U.S. Marshals Service. After weeks of tracking, he was finally apprehended in Washington, D.C., on July 24. This case is a key component of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels, and protecting communities from violent crime. The operation combines resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).

The investigation was conducted by HSI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It’s crucial to remember that these are merely allegations at this point. Cristian Geovanni Rojas Benitez is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
