Fentanyl Kingpin Fountain Gets 25 Years

WILMINGTON, Del. – Dwayne Fountain, 54, of Middletown, Delaware, is facing a quarter-century behind bars after being sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. The sentence, handed down August 24, 2025, by Chief U.S. District Judge Colm F. Connolly, caps a case that exposed a ruthless drug operation responsible for flooding the First State with poison. Fountain was convicted in March 2025 following a trial that laid bare his role as a leader in a large-scale drug trafficking organization.

The bust, spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Delaware State Police, and Dover Police Department, yielded a staggering amount of narcotics – over 10.5 kilograms of fentanyl, marking the largest fentanyl seizure in Delaware history. But the quantity wasn’t the only damning detail. Evidence presented at trial revealed Fountain wasn’t just moving weight; he was actively making it more dangerous. He routinely cut the drugs with xylazine, known on the streets as “tranq,” to increase potency and maximize profit, knowingly playing Russian roulette with the lives of his customers.

Investigators uncovered a sophisticated operation. A kilogram press was found in a Middletown home Fountain owned, used to re-form the adulterated drugs into “bricks” for street distribution. He also maintained a stash house in Bear, Delaware, where he kept his inventory. The search warrants didn’t stop at fentanyl. Authorities seized over 200 grams of pure methamphetamine, 3.5 kilograms of cocaine, and nearly 3 kilograms of heroin. It was a one-stop shop for misery, all orchestrated by Fountain’s greed.

What’s particularly chilling is Fountain’s callous disregard for human life. On a recorded call, he admitted knowing the drugs he sold could kill people, stating, “They said it’s too strong, come on man… We all got some sh*t that can make a [person]die. For real, for real. You gotta know how to mix it right.” The depravity didn’t end there. Fountain stored his drugs in the same apartment as his teenage son, and, disturbingly, coached another son on the ins and outs of running a drug operation during wiretapped conversations.

U.S. Attorney Julianne E. Murray minced no words: “The defendant well knew the danger he was causing, both to his own family and to the public. He sold drugs anyway, for no reason other than the desire to make money. The Court’s sentence sends the right message – selling drugs, especially fentanyl – will land you in federal prison for many years.” Dover Police Chief Thomas Johnson highlighted the impact of the takedown, noting a 36% drop in overdose deaths in Delaware in 2024, attributing a portion of that success to Fountain’s arrest. “Sometimes we forget the months of crime fighting efforts put in by our police officers,” he said.

Delaware State Police Superintendent William D. Crotty echoed those sentiments. “This case serves as a reminder of the dangers our communities face from fentanyl and other synthetic opioids,” he stated. “The amount of fentanyl seized in this case could have led to countless overdoses.” Special Agents involved in the case confirmed Fountain was actively “poisoning our communities” and that his 25-year sentence brings a measure of justice – and hopefully, a reprieve – to a state ravaged by the opioid crisis.
