CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – Rodney S. Knotts, 55, of Ravenna, Ohio, faced the federal bench today for his involvement in a firearms violation that shocked Ritchie County. The veteran criminal was sentenced to 20 months in federal prison for unlawful possession of a firearm as a felon.
Knotts’ fall from grace began when court documents revealed his sales of firearms, ammunition, and parts across Ritchie County. His sentence comes with the heavy weight of three prior felonies that stripped him of the right to own firearms. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was instrumental in this investigation.
In another disturbing case, Daniel Earl Spell, 35, from Fairmont, West Virginia, admitted to two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm. According to court documents, Spell’s misdeeds involved a pistol found in Marion County. His prior domestic battery conviction and felony record in Monongalia County were clear violations of his rights to possess firearms.
Spell faces up to 15 years in prison for each count, with the federal district court judge yet to determine his sentence based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors. Assistant U.S. Attorney Will Rhee is spearheading the government’s prosecution.
This sentencing comes as part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide DOJ initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime. The operation streamlines resources from various task forces and projects within the Department of Justice.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over these important proceedings, ensuring that justice was served in both cases.
