Midlands Men Get Hard Time in Cross-State Drug Ring

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A pair of Midlands men are headed to federal prison after being sentenced for their involvement in a large-scale drug conspiracy stretching from Arizona to the Carolinas and beyond. Drain Maurice Mazone, 54, of Irmo, received a crippling 13-year sentence, while Clinton Raymond Donaldson, 42, of Columbia, will spend three years behind bars.

The investigation, spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, revealed a sophisticated operation where narcotics were sourced in Arizona and shipped eastward. Mazone acted as a key distributor, receiving packages and funneling the drugs into the streets. Donaldson played a crucial support role, providing addresses for package delivery and assisting with the distribution network. The operation wasn’t just local; packages containing contraband were intercepted heading to Columbia, Florence, Myrtle Beach, and even locations in North Carolina, Maryland, and Florida.

According to court documents, the conspiracy involved significant quantities of dangerous drugs: crack cocaine, 5 kilograms or more of cocaine, 400 grams or more of fentanyl, and marijuana. Proceeds from the illicit sales were then funneled back to the original source in Arizona, completing the criminal cycle. All four individuals implicated in the conspiracy have now admitted guilt and faced sentencing for their crimes.

United States District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis handed down the sentences on Wednesday. Mazone was sentenced to 156 months’ imprisonment, followed by a five-year term of court-ordered supervision. Donaldson received 36 months’ imprisonment, to be followed by a three-year term of supervision. It’s a harsh reality, but there is no parole in the federal system – these men will serve every day of their sentences.

This case is far from isolated. It’s part of a larger, nationwide initiative under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF). OCDETF focuses on dismantling the highest-level drug trafficking organizations by leveraging a multi-agency approach, combining the resources of federal, state, and local law enforcement. Their mission is to choke off the supply and disrupt the networks that flood our communities with poison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney William K. Witherspoon prosecuted the case, demonstrating a commitment to holding these criminals accountable. Those interested in learning more about the OCDETF Program can find further information at https://www.justice.gov/OCDETF. This conviction sends a clear message: moving illegal drugs across state lines will result in significant federal penalties. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing fight against drug trafficking in the region.
