Syracuse, NY – A disturbing case of sexual exploitation and child pornography has landed John Secor Jr., 44, from Rome, New York, in federal court. The charges against Secor Jr., announced by Acting United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III and Erin Keegan of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), include sexual exploitation of a child and receipt of child pornography.
According to the complaint, Secor Jr. began communicating online with a 16-year-old girl in May 2025. The chats escalated to sexually explicit content, with Secor Jr. demanding the creation of sexually explicit images and videos by the minor. One occasion stands out where Secor Jr. attempted to arrange a meeting for sex with the child.
Secor Jr. faces significant penalties if convicted, including at least 15 years in prison for exploitation and up to 20 years for possession of child pornography. Both charges also carry fines reaching $250,000 and a mandatory term of supervised release. Upon release, he would be required to register as a sex offender.
Secor Jr. was arraigned before United States Magistrate Judge Miroslav Lovric and ordered detained pending further proceedings. Acting U.S. Attorney Sarcone emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, noting that his office will pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law.
HSI Buffalo Field Office’s Erin Keegan highlighted the organization’s commitment to protecting communities from predators like Secor Jr., emphasizing their dedication to partnership and accountability for those who exploit children. New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James echoed these sentiments, ensuring that such crimes will not be tolerated.
The investigation into this case is being led by Assistant United States Attorney Adrian LaRochelle as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide effort against child sexual exploitation and abuse.
