Rockford Gun Runner Gets 13 Months

ROCKFORD, IL – Jamarius Holman, 25, of Rockford is headed to federal prison for thirteen months after admitting to acting as a straw purchaser for three firearms. The sentence, handed down Thursday by U.S. District Judge Iain D. Johnston, underscores a growing federal crackdown on illegal gun trafficking in Northern Illinois.

Holman pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of knowingly providing a false and fictitious written statement to a federally licensed dealer. Court documents reveal that Holman misrepresented himself as the actual buyer of the firearms when, in reality, he was acquiring them on behalf of an individual legally barred from ownership – someone without a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card. This isn’t just a paperwork issue; it’s putting guns into the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.

The scheme unfolded in May of 2023, with Holman completing two separate transactions to obtain the three firearms. He knowingly falsified the required transaction records, claiming to be the intended recipient when he knew full well the guns were destined for another person. This type of deception allows prohibited individuals to circumvent the law and obtain weapons, fueling violence on the streets.

U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros for the Northern District of Illinois, and Christopher Amon, Special Agent-in-Charge of the ATF’s Chicago Field Division, announced the sentencing. The case is a prime example of how federal resources are being deployed under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program focused on holding illegal firearm possessors accountable. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and its law enforcement partners are actively targeting firearm offenses across the district.

This isn’t a victimless crime. Every illegally obtained firearm represents a potential tragedy. While thirteen months may seem a short sentence to some, it sends a clear message that straw purchasing carries serious consequences. The ATF and the U.S. Attorney’s Office are committed to disrupting these networks and keeping guns out of the wrong hands.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert S. Ladd prosecuted the case. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case, and others like it, as they move through the federal court system. This sentencing serves as a stark reminder that those who facilitate illegal gun trafficking will face the full weight of federal law.
