COEUR D’ALENE – In a chilling revelation, Alexander Scott Mercurio, 20, of Coeur d’Alene, has pleaded guilty to Attempt to Provide Material Support and Resources to a Designated Foreign Terrorist Organization. This admission comes from U.S. Attorney Bart M. Davis, who announced the charges against the young man.
According to court records, Mercurio not only pledged his allegiance to ISIS but also harbored intentions of launching an attack in Coeur d’Alene on behalf of the terrorist organization. He had planned a terror strike for April 7, 2024, targeting churches within the city using various weapons. The audacity of his plans was thwarted when he purchased items to support his scheme.
In an eerie prelude to his attack, Mercurio stood before an ISIS flag with a knife in hand, reiterating his allegiance to the group. However, the FBI apprehended him on April 6, one day prior to the scheduled atrocity. The quick action of federal agents averted what could have been a devastating event.
Sentencing for Mercurio is set for January 27, 2026, before Chief District Judge David C. Nye. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison—a fate that awaits any who dare to plot against the American people and their way of life.
The U.S. Attorney Bart Davis extended his commendations to the FBI for their swift and efficient investigation. The bureau was ably supported by the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ada County Sheriff’s Office in this critical operation.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Heather S. Patricco and David G. Robins, representing the District of Idaho, along with attorneys from the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, are handling the prosecution of this case—a testament to the commitment of justice against those who threaten our national security and public safety.
