Baker’s Bloody Binge: Multi-Million Dollar Meth Kingpin Busted
NEW YORK, NY – In a stunning blow to the city’s illicit narcotics trade, federal authorities yesterday took down a high-ranking methamphetamine trafficker, Michael Baker, in a case that exposed a sprawling multi-million dollar empire.
According to court documents, Baker, 42, a Bronx native, masterminded a vast network that funneled an estimated $10 million worth of methamphetamine into New York City’s streets over the past three years.
Baker’s operation allegedly employed a sophisticated money laundering scheme, using shell companies to conceal illicit funds, and recruited a network of operatives to distribute the highly addictive substance.
A 12-count indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, charges Baker with one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine, as well as other related offenses.
“This case is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of methamphetamine on our communities,” said U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams. “Baker’s brazen operation brought harm to countless families and individuals, and we will seek justice on their behalf.”
Baker, who faces up to life in prison if convicted, is being held without bail pending a trial scheduled to begin in June. Attorneys for Baker did not respond to requests for comment.
