Honduran National Sentenced for Social Security Number Scam

A 25-year-old Honduran national has been sentenced to five months in prison for using a fake Social Security number to obtain a Louisiana identification card.

Osnin Isaac Urbina-Maradiaga was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lance M. Africk in federal court in Louisiana, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Dana Boente.

Urbina-Maradiaga was also ordered to serve one year of supervised release following his prison term, during which time he will be under federal supervision and risk an additional term of imprisonment if he violates any terms of supervised release.

According to court documents, Urbina-Maradiaga pleaded guilty to a one-count indictment admitting that he falsely represented that a Social Security number had been assigned to him by the Commissioner of Social Security with the intent to deceive, in order to obtain a Louisiana Identification Card at a Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles located in St. John the Baptist Parish.

Urbina-Maradiaga also admitted that he was illegally present in the United States at the time of the offense.

The case was investigated by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Robert Weir.

Urbina-Maradiaga’s sentence is the latest example of the consequences of using fake identification documents to obtain benefits or services in the United States.

The case serves as a reminder to individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States that using fake identification documents is a serious crime with serious consequences.
