Vidalia Attorney Indicted on $1M Fraud Charges
Savannah, GA – A shocking case of betrayal has come to light in Vidalia, Georgia, with the indictment of 63-year-old licensed attorney Wilson R. Smith on federal fraud and identity theft charges. Smith, who has been in custody at the Toombs County Jail since his arrest on state charges, faces a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison and a $1,250,000 fine if convicted.
The indictment alleges that Smith stole over $1 million in fraudulently obtained settlement proceeds from his clients. The scheme involved Smith settling cases without his clients’ knowledge and stealing the settlement proceeds.
Smith faces federal charges of mail fraud and bank fraud. He also faces a count of aggravated identity theft, which would add an additional two-year prison sentence to his sentence, consecutive to any other sentence imposed.
U.S. Attorney Edward Tarver emphasized that an indictment is only an accusation and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Smith already faces state charges of theft by deception and forgery. His state case was investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by District Attorney Hayward Altman of the Middle Judicial Circuit.
First Assistant United States Attorney James D. Durham is prosecuting the federal case on behalf of the United States. The investigation of this case remains ongoing.
The people of Vidalia, Georgia, are left reeling as they try to come to terms with the alleged betrayal of trust by one of their own. As the case unfolds, one thing is clear: justice will be served, and those responsible will be held accountable.
