Adolphus Nwokedi, Heroin Importation, New Jersey 2024

A Sayreville, New Jersey, man has been slammed with a 63-month federal prison sentence for attempting to import more than half a kilo of heroin from India into the United States. Adolphus Nwokedi, 48, was sentenced today in Newark federal court after being convicted in a swift three-day trial that laid bare his role in an international drug smuggling ring.

Nwokedi was found guilty of one count of conspiring to import 100 grams or more of heroin, a charge that carried serious federal penalties. U.S. District Judge Esther Salas handed down the sentence after hearing evidence that Nwokedi agreed to accept a parcel laced with 524 grams of heroin at his business address in Newark, then deliver it to a co-conspirator in the Bronx, New York. For his part in the scheme, Nwokedi was promised $3,000.

The plot unraveled when U.S. Customs officers at John F. Kennedy International Airport intercepted the parcel on December 11, 2013. Hidden inside were 524 grams of high-purity heroin, enough to flood city blocks with deadly doses. Rather than let the bust go cold, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents orchestrated a controlled delivery—tracking the package straight to Nwokedi’s doorstep.

On January 2, 2014, Nwokedi walked right into the trap, personally accepting the parcel at his Newark business. Surveillance footage captured the moment; federal agents moved in seconds later. The arrest marked a direct hit on an overseas drug pipeline attempting to exploit U.S. mail infrastructure for mass distribution.

In addition to 63 months behind bars, Judge Salas sentenced Nwokedi to four years of supervised release—meaning federal eyes will be on him long after he walks out of prison. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys David M. Eskew and Melissa Wangenheim of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Newark, with support from HSI Newark under Special Agent in Charge Terence S. Opiola.

Nwokedi was represented by Kevin F. Carlucci, Assistant Federal Public Defender. U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman emphasized that federal agencies remain locked in on transnational drug networks, warning that attempts to funnel bulk narcotics through international mail will be met with maximum penalties. This conviction sends a clear message: the U.S. border isn’t just a line—it’s a net.
