AG James Joins 11 States in Warning Against Trump’s Misleading Buyout Offer

New York – A coalition of state attorneys general, led by New York’s own Letitia James, has sounded the alarm on President Trump’s misleading ‘deferred resignation’ program aimed at federal employees.

The so-called buyout offer, purported to provide federal workers with pay through September 30, 2025, in exchange for resignation by February 6, is nothing but a thinly veiled attack on America’s public servants, according to the coalition.

‘President Trump’s so-called buyout offers are nothing more than the latest attack on federal workers and the services they provide,’ Attorney General James declared. ‘These supposed offers are not guaranteed. Federal employees should be cautious and follow the guidance of their unions to protect their rights.’

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) initially sent an email detailing the offer on January 28, followed by a second email on January 30 urging federal employees to seek ‘higher productivity’ jobs outside of government. The OPM instructed that February 6 was the deadline for deciding whether to remain in their position or resign under the program.

However, unions including the American Federation of Government Employees and the National Federation of Federal Employees have cautioned members against accepting the offer, emphasizing that benefits are not guaranteed. Attorney General James has been at the forefront of protecting federal services, leading a coalition of 22 attorneys general in suing to block a freeze on federal funds to states earlier this month.

Joining Attorney General James in issuing the warning are the attorneys general of Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Vermont, and Washington.
