New York – In a decisive stand against the Trump administration’s political maneuvering, Attorney General Letitia James has joined forces with 21 other state attorneys general to safeguard funding under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
In an amicus brief filed with the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island, the coalition argues that the Department of Justice’s new requirements infringe on the law and threaten vulnerable survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking.
“The Violence Against Women Act has been a beacon of hope for survivors, but this administration’s illegal attempt to misuse funds will cast a dark shadow over our communities,” declared Attorney General James. “I am committed to ensuring that New Yorkers can seek justice without political interference.”
The brief highlights the VAWA’s role in reducing domestic violence by 64 percent since its inception in 1994, emphasizing the law’s support for law enforcement training and services like medical care, hotlines, shelters, and victim advocacy.
Attorney General James and the coalition assert that the Trump administration’s new conditions on VAWA funds, which ban organizations from providing “out-of-scope” services promoting diversity and gender ideology, undermine public safety. The brief also argues that these restrictions contradict Congress’ intent to prevent discrimination in VAWA programs.
The coalition is seeking a preliminary injunction to block the enforcement of the DOJ’s new guidelines on VAWA funding. Joining Attorney General James are attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, and other states across the nation.
