New York – A federal judge has ruled in favor of New York Attorney General Letitia James, blocking the Trump administration’s attempt to penalize states with millions of dollars over their SNAP operations. The decision ensures that SNAP benefits will continue uninterrupted.
In a statement released December 15th, AG James emphasized the importance of the program for vulnerable residents: “Our most vulnerable rely on SNAP for food. Today’s court order guarantees New York’s program can keep running, especially crucial during the holiday season.”
AG James led a coalition of 21 attorneys general in a lawsuit against the Trump administration on November 26th after efforts to cut off SNAP benefits for tens of thousands of lawful permanent residents were initiated. The reversal by the administration on December 10th confirming eligibility for these groups was greeted with relief, but penalties still loomed.
Despite the new guidance, the federal government continued to threaten states with fines for missing a non-existent “grace period,” prompting the court’s intervention. Today’s order temporarily blocks these penalties while the case is ongoing.
The U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon’s decision comes as a significant victory for SNAP recipients and highlights the ongoing struggle against efforts to limit access to essential social services.
