AG James Unveils Graphic Footage in Ordoñez-Banegas Death Probe

New York Attorney General Letitia James has dropped a bombshell by releasing graphic body-worn camera footage from the investigation into the tragic death of Emilson Joan Ordoñez-Banegas, who met his demise on July 13, 2025.

The video captures an intense encounter between Ordoñez-Banegas and members of the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) in Centereach. After responding to a report of an assault with a knife, officers found themselves facing an injured individual as well as Mr. Ordoñez-Banegas, who was wielding what appeared to be a weapon. The situation quickly escalated, ending with one officer discharging his service weapon, leading to the young man’s death.

According to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is mandated to investigate any incident where an officer may have caused a person’s death. This law applies regardless of whether the officer was on-duty or off-duty and irrespective of the circumstances surrounding the decedent’s status.

The release of this footage is not intended as a statement regarding the guilt or innocence of any party involved in the criminal matter at hand, nor does it express an opinion about potential charges. However, it does serve to underscore the necessity for transparency in such matters.

This disturbing video has reignited public debate over police use of force and is expected to scrutinize further the actions of the officers involved. As a stark reminder of the gravity of these events, viewers are advised that the content may be unsettling.
