New York – In a striking move of solidarity amidst disaster, New York Attorney General Letitia James has demanded the federal government extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Jamaicans. The plea comes in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, which on October 28, 2025, unleashed destruction upon Jamaica, leaving at least 45 dead and billions in damage.
In a letter addressed to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), AG James passionately advocates for immediate TPS for Jamaicans, emphasizing the humanitarian necessity. ‘Hurricane Melissa has caused unimaginable damage,’ she stated. ‘Forcing Jamaicans in the U.S. to return home would be dangerous and cruel.’
Attorney General James points out that such situations align perfectly with the purpose of TPS, which was established to grant legal status to those unable to safely return home. The U.S. has previously utilized TPS following natural disasters like Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Nepal.
Hurricane Melissa’s wallop was unprecedented in Jamaica’s history, displacing tens of thousands and cutting off essential services for many. Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke echoed the urgency, emphasizing the moral and diplomatic obligation of the U.S. to its Caribbean ally. ‘Stopping the forceful expulsion of Jamaican nationals is one such commitment,’ she said.
Queens Borough President Dono, with personal ties to Jamaica through his heritage, expressed deep concern over the situation. ‘The images breaking my heart are those coming out of Jamaica after Melissa’s wrath,’ he commented.
