A masked gunman brandished a firearm and assaulted an ATM attendant in Topeka, Kan., on Sept. 16, 2014. The victim was left shaken after the attack, which was part of a planned armed robbery.
The gunman, later identified as Pattrick J. Towner, took money from the ATM and escaped in a van belonging to the victim. Topeka police responded to the scene, but the suspect was able to flee in the van.
Investigations revealed that Ahmad Salim Salti, then a 21-year-old clerk at the Low Cost Plus convenience store, had helped plan the robbery. Salti gave Towner the date and time the victim would be filling the ATM.
Salti pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery and was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison. His co-defendant, Pattrick J. Towner, has also pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.
The Topeka Police Department and the FBI worked together with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared Maag to bring the case to a close. U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom commended the agencies for their work on the case.
The incident highlights the importance of community policing and the need for residents to look out for one another. If you have any information about this or any other crime, please contact the Topeka Police Department.
