MIAMI – The grim reaper of the inheritance con, Ehis Lawrence Akhimie, was handed a 97-month sentence this week for his sinister role in a transnational scheme that bilked millions from America’s most vulnerable. The 41-year-old Nigerian national was part of a crew that sent personalized phishing letters to elderly Americans, falsely claiming they were entitled to multimillion-dollar inheritances.
Akhimie and his cronies spun a web of lies, demanding ‘delivery fees’ and ‘taxes’ before the victims could claim their fictional riches. The con artists collected cash through a network of former marks, who were duped into forwarding funds. The elderly dupes received nothing but heartbreak in return.
In a plea deal that did little to temper his greed, Akhimie confessed to swindling over $6 million from more than 400 victims, most of them senior citizens or the vulnerable. U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones branded the scheme as an attack on the dignity of America’s seniors, vowing relentless pursuit of such predators.
Brett A. Shumate, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division, emphasized the global reach of justice in this case, hailing international collaboration and expressing gratitude to law enforcement partners worldwide. Bladismir Rojo of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) Miami Division reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to protecting consumers from transnational criminal organizations.
Ray Rede of HSI Arizona summed up the unyielding stance against fraud, stating that justice will always prevail over those who exploit others for personal gain. Akhimie is just the eighth defendant sentenced in this case; six others have already faced justice. The scheme’s mastermind, Okezie Bonaventure Ogbata, was extradited from Portugal to serve a 97-month sentence.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service and HSI led the investigation, with critical support from the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs, Europol, and authorities in the UK, Spain, and Portugal.
