PHOENIX, Ariz. – In a shocking turn of events, Al Shonnie Ben, 40, of Tuba City, Ariz., was sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment followed by five years of supervised release for his role in a brutal kidnapping case.
The crimes, which date back to Sept. 7, 2014, left three victims, all members of the Navajo Nation, with serious and substantial bodily injuries. Ben, also a member of the Navajo Nation, used a knife to carry out the kidnappings.
According to court documents, Ben’s victims were subjected to a terrifying ordeal, with one witness describing the scene as ‘horrific’. The investigation, which was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Navajo Nation Department of Public Safety, uncovered a trail of evidence that led to Ben’s arrest and subsequent guilty plea.
Ben’s sentencing marks a significant victory for the victims and their families, who have been seeking justice for years. ‘This sentence sends a strong message that kidnapping and violence will not be tolerated in our community,’ said Dimitra H. Sampson, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona. ‘We are committed to protecting the vulnerable and holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.’
