Alberto Silva-Garcia, Illegal Reentry, Connecticut 2017

Alberto Silva-Garcia, a 42-year-old citizen of Mexico, has pleaded guilty to illegally reentering the United States after being deported in 1999, following a domestic violence conviction in California.

Silva-Garcia, who has been living in Norwalk, was deported to his native Mexico in March 1999. However, he was encountered multiple times by immigration agents between 1999 and 2004, while in custody following controlled substance violations and on several occasions after falsely claiming U.S. citizenship.

On 11 documented occasions, Silva-Garcia was removed to Mexico by foot. He was arrested for motor vehicle offenses in Norwalk in August 2009 and was subsequently charged with illegal reentry in U.S. District Court in Connecticut, receiving a 12-month prison sentence.

In December 2010, Silva-Garcia was removed to Mexico again. However, he illegally reentered the U.S. and was charged with larceny and burglary offenses in superior court in Norwalk in March 2015, stemming from a crime spree involving the theft of construction tools and equipment.

Silva-Garcia pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to three years of incarceration. He has been detained in ICE custody since October 2016.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Alker Meyer has scheduled sentencing for April 25, 2017, at which time Silva-Garcia faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years.

This case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with Assistant U.S. Attorney Deborah R. Slater handling the prosecution.
