Alfonso Jose Mendez Jr., Perjury, Arizona 2018

Former United States Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Agent Alfonso Jose Mendez Jr., 54, of Tucson, Ariz., is facing up to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to perjury yesterday.

According to court documents, Mendez Jr. perjured himself during sworn oral testimony before an investigator for the Equal Opportunity Commission while employed as a BOP SIA at a BOP facility.

The SIA for a BOP facility is the individual responsible for supervising internal investigations into staff and inmate misconduct, intelligence gathering, and security threat analyses.

Under his plea agreement, Mendez Jr. faces up to 21 months in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for February 20, 2019, before U.S. District Judge James A. Soto.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice-Office of Inspector General. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Rosaleen O’Gara and Gordon E. Davenport III.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said that Mendez Jr. will be sentenced on February 20, 2019, before U.S. District Judge James A. Soto. Mendez Jr. faces up to 21 months in prison for his role in perjury.
