Ali Al-Awadi, Child Pornography, Indiana 2016

INDIANAPOLIS – In a shocking turn of events, a former daycare employee has been sentenced for his involvement in a child pornography case that left a family reeling. Ali Al-Awadi, 22, of Indianapolis, was handed a 27-year prison sentence by U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt on February 2016 charges of child pornography.

The victim, a four-year-old girl, was molested by Al-Awadi while she was napping at the Children’s Choice Learning Center at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. The defendant took several sexually explicit photos of the child on his cell phone, which he later used to commit the heinous crime.

The victim bravely testified at trial that she was fondled and hurt by Al-Awadi, who was employed as a daycare provider at the time of the incident. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department led the investigation, with Detectives Grant Melton and Eli McAllister providing crucial assistance in the prosecution of the case.

U.S. Attorney Josh J. Minkler praised the victim and her family for their courage in confronting Al-Awadi, stating that their actions undoubtedly saved more children from suffering a similar fate. Minkler also emphasized the importance of reporting child abuse, reminding the public that Indiana’s laws are clear on this matter.

Al-Awadi has also been charged by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office with one count of child molesting, a level three felony. If convicted, he faces an additional sentence of up to 16 years in prison.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our children from predators like Al-Awadi. The Indiana Child Abuse Hotline is available 24/7 for anyone who suspects a child is being abused, with a hotline number of 1-800-800-5556.

Assistant United States Attorneys Kristina Korobov and Bradley Shepard prosecuted the case, with Al-Awadi facing 15 years of supervised release after his sentence. The community is left to wonder how such a heinous crime could occur, and what measures can be taken to prevent it from happening again in the future.
