MINNEAPOLIS – A Chicago man with a lengthy rap sheet is headed to federal prison after a tense standoff with a St. Paul police officer revealed a stolen 9mm pistol tucked away. Allen Denzel Oliver-Hall, 28, was sentenced today to 70 months behind bars, followed by two years of supervised release, for illegally possessing a firearm.
The incident unfolded June 21, 2022, when officers responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance at an apartment. Upon arrival, officers encountered Oliver-Hall, who immediately attempted to conceal a loaded American Tactical 92 9mm pistol as he tried to maneuver the officer’s position. The gun, authorities later determined, was stolen.
A struggle ensued as the officer attempted to disarm Oliver-Hall. The situation escalated dangerously, with the firearm briefly pointed directly at the responding officer before it was secured. The quick actions of the officer prevented what could have been a far more tragic outcome.
Oliver-Hall’s criminal history sealed his fate. With multiple prior felony convictions already on his record in Cook County, Illinois, federal law explicitly prohibits him from owning or possessing any firearms or ammunition. He pleaded guilty October 25, 2022, to one count of possessing a firearm as a felon, admitting to the illegal weapon.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz handed down the 70-month sentence today. The case was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the St. Paul Police Department, highlighting the importance of interagency cooperation in tackling gun crime.
