ATLANTA — Ronald L. Wheeler III, a/k/a Trappy, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit access device fraud for his role as public relations specialist for AlphaBay, a sprawling dark web marketplace used for trafficking stolen data, drugs, and weapons. The 24-year-old from Streamwood, Illinois, admitted to actively promoting the site and guiding users on evading law enforcement detection through encrypted forums and public platforms.
Wheeler’s digital campaign for AlphaBay began around May 25, 2015, when he started moderating the site’s subreddit on Reddit.com and managing internal message boards. He mediated disputes between buyers and sellers of illicit goods, promoted AlphaBay across the internet, and provided non-technical support to users—all while being paid in Bitcoin. His work helped normalize and expand one of the most dangerous criminal bazaars on the TOR network.
At its peak, AlphaBay hosted over a quarter-million listings for illegal drugs, including heroin, cocaine, and synthetic opioids. It also offered thousands of listings for stolen personal data: 4,488 for personally identifying information, 28,800 for compromised online accounts, and 6,008 for stolen credit card credentials. Hacking tools like botnets and exploit kits were openly sold, creating a blueprint for widespread cyber-enabled fraud.
“Wheeler spent hours on the Dark Web and general Internet providing AlphaBay users tips for attempting to avoid detection by law enforcement,” said U.S. Attorney Byung J. “BJay” Pak. “His plea is the end of his nefarious career as an AlphaBay promoter.”
Law enforcement officials emphasized that Wheeler’s guilty plea shatters the myth of dark web anonymity. “If people think the Dark Web gives them autonomy to operate illegally behind a cyber-curtain without the scrutiny of law enforcement, then Mr. Wheeler’s plea is a stark reminder that we won’t let that happen,” said FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge David J. LeValley.
Sentencing for Ronald L. Wheeler III, a/k/a Trappy, is scheduled for May 24, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. before U.S. District Judge Leigh M. May. The case was investigated by the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Samir Kaushal, with substantial assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
