A brazen armed carjacking in the early evening hours of January 8, 2014, has led to a 97-month prison sentence for East Orange, New Jersey, resident Alsharif Scriven, 27. According to court documents, Scriven jumped into the open driver’s side door of a 2012 Honda Accord parked outside the victim’s Newark residence and attempted to steal the car.
When the victim exited the vehicle to open the garage door, Scriven, who was carrying a firearm, jumped into the driver’s side door and attempted to steal the car. After a struggle with the victim, Scriven ultimately took control of the vehicle and drove away.
Scriven pleaded guilty to one count of theft of a motor vehicle by force, violence and intimidation and one count of using a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. The sentencing took place today in Newark federal court before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton.
In addition to the 97-month prison sentence, Judge Wigenton also sentenced Scriven to serve five years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman credited the investigation to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, the Essex County Police Department, and the Union County Police Department.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Josh Hafetz of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark. Defense counsel for Scriven was Chester Keller Esq., First Assistant Federal Public Defender, Newark.
