A 37-year-old Northside man is facing federal time after being caught with a loaded gun and ammunition—despite being legally barred from owning either. Ambrose J. Sample II, an Allegheny County resident and convicted felon, was indicted on two counts of federal firearm violations by a Pittsburgh grand jury on February 6.
The charges stem from an incident on or about June 17, 2017, when Sample allegedly possessed a firearm and live rounds. Federal law strictly prohibits any individual previously convicted of a felony from being in possession of firearms or ammunition—violations that carry serious consequences.
Each count in the indictment carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or both. If convicted, the actual sentence will be determined under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, weighing the severity of the offense and Sample’s criminal past.
Assistant United States Attorney Shanicka L. Kennedy is leading the prosecution in the case, pushing for accountability under federal statutes designed to keep weapons out of the hands of dangerous individuals.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, alongside the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, conducted the investigation that led to the indictment. Sources confirm the probe involved field work, ballistics records, and criminal database checks to build the case against Sample.
