American Intervention: A Recipe for Chaos in Cuba

The year 1907 saw the Cuban Revolution spiraling out of control. In August, insurgent forces had been gaining momentum in western Cuba, with 23 reported uprisings. The government, desperate to quell the rebellion, raised 10,000 men to fight the rebels. But the insurgents, estimated at 7,000 strong, dug in deep in the Plnar del Rio province. The conflict escalated on August 24, with heavy fighting breaking out in the province. Just days later, on August 28, a group of 100 insurgents descended upon the town of Das Lujan in Santa Clara province, looting and pillaging at will.
