A man accused of storming a local bank and snatching $5,590 in broad daylight now faces federal time. Adam Carson, 34, of Amherst, was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges tied to the armed robbery of Chemical Bank on November 21, 2016.
According to the indictment, Carson used force, violence, and intimidation to seize the cash from the teller’s station at the bank located at 1977 Cooper Foster Park Road. Surveillance footage and witness accounts paint a picture of a calm, calculated heist in the heart of Amherst.
The Amherst Police Department and FBI launched a joint investigation into the robbery, tracing evidence that ultimately led to Carson. Federal authorities moved swiftly to secure the indictment, signaling no tolerance for violent crimes against financial institutions.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ranya Elzein is prosecuting the case, which now heads toward trial in the Northern District of Ohio. U.S. Attorney Carole S. Rendon confirmed the charges, emphasizing that such acts threaten public safety and will be met with full legal consequences.
If convicted, Carson faces a sentence determined by the court, weighing factors like prior record, role in the crime, and the nature of the offense. While the statutory maximum applies, actual time served may be less depending on sentencing guidelines.
It bears repeating: an indictment is not a conviction. Carson is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The government now carries the burden of proof as the case moves forward.
