Amit Govil, a 58-year-old certified public accountant from New Brunswick, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return, avoiding more than $672,000 in taxes, according to a recent indictment.
Govil, who operated P&G Associates, a business providing risk management and audit services to community banks, admitted to underreporting the gross receipts or sales of his company on Schedule C of his personal tax return for the tax year 2010.
The count of making and subscribing a false tax return carries a maximum potential penalty of three years in prison and $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense.
Govil’s guilty plea was announced by U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito, who credited special agents of the IRS, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge John R. Tafur, with the investigation leading to the guilty plea.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Courtney A. Howard and Catherine R. Murphy of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Economic Crimes Unit.
Defense counsel for Govil is Jeffrey Alberts Esq., from New York.
Govil is scheduled to be sentenced on May 13, 2019.
