A Texas law enforcement officer turned notorious trafficker, Amy Reyes, has pleaded guilty to possessing with intent to distribute 34 kilograms of marijuana, according to court documents. Reyes, 32, a former deputy with the Starr County Sheriff’s Office, was arrested on November 10, 2014, at the Border Patrol Checkpoint in Hebbronville.
Reyes and her brother, Bobby Lee Reyes, 36, were riding in a 2010 Chevy Malibu when a canine alerted agents to the presence of narcotics. An x-ray examination revealed 12 bundles of marijuana weighing 34.9 kilograms hidden underneath the vehicle’s floor carpet.
The siblings admitted to trafficking marijuana to Houston and expected financial compensation for their involvement. Reyes was terminated from her position as a deputy sheriff in Starr County.
U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo will set sentencing in the near future. At that time, Amy Reyes and her brother face up to five years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine. They were permitted to remain on bond pending the hearing.
The charges are the result of an investigation by Border Patrol and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sanjeev Bhasker is prosecuting the case.
Amy Reyes’s betrayal of the public trust is a stark reminder of the dangers of corruption within law enforcement ranks. As a deputy sheriff, Reyes had access to sensitive information and resources, which she exploited for personal gain.
The Reyes siblings’ case highlights the need for increased accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies. It also underscores the importance of robust investigation and prosecution of corruption cases.
