INDIANAPOLIS – Joshua W. Stearman, 42, of Anderson, Indiana, is headed to federal prison for 65 months after a jury found him guilty of a dangerous double-play: crafting homemade firebombs and pretending to be a federal officer. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt, includes three years of supervised release following his incarceration.
The trouble began just after 1:47 a.m. on December 12, 2023, when Ingalls Police responded to a report of a suspicious person lurking near a home with a history of vandalism and arson. A witness reported seeing Stearman approaching the property with an object before hightailing it to a red Toyota RAV4 when security lights flared. Officers quickly intercepted the vehicle, and that’s when the lies started. Stearman flashed his driver’s license and a bogus government ID, claiming to be a Homeland Security Officer fresh off a mission. Adding to the strangeness, he was sporting black gloves with duct tape wrapped tightly around his wrists.
A search of the RAV4 revealed the true nature of Stearman’s late-night activities. Inside, officers discovered four glass bottles brimming with gasoline, each rigged with cloth wicks and wood pieces – textbook components of an incendiary bomb. A lighter was also recovered. Experts from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) didn’t mince words: these weren’t just bottles of gasoline; they were fully functional, potentially devastating, firebombs. A forensic chemist confirmed the liquid was indeed gasoline, and a destructive device examiner laid out how the devices were designed to ignite and spread fire upon impact.
“This defendant not only endangered lives by bringing homemade firebombs into a residential neighborhood but also sought to evade detection by impersonating a Homeland Security officer,” stated U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, Tom Wheeler. “Thanks to the swift actions of local law enforcement and the expert analysis of our federal partners, this dangerous individual was stopped before he could carry out a potentially deadly attack.” The case highlights a disturbing willingness to combine violent intent with deceptive tactics.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the ATF and the Ingalls Police Department, with crucial assistance from the Lapel Police Department and the Department of Homeland Security itself. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jayson W. McGrath and Nate Walter were responsible for the prosecution, successfully convincing the jury of Stearman’s guilt.
