A brazen shooting in Jersey City left a victim with a gunshot wound, but it was just the beginning of a chain of events that led to the arrest and conviction of a local man.
On July 11, 2020, a victim was shot in the leg near Martin Luther King Drive and Oak Street in Jersey City. The shooting was caught on surveillance video, which showed that 29-year-old Andre Cannon was the perpetrator.
Police quickly discovered a .40-caliber S&W shell casing in a nearby courtyard and launched an investigation into the shooting. The next day, they executed a search warrant at Cannon’s house, where officers found a black Beretta Gardone .40-caliber handgun loaded with 10 .40-caliber rounds of ammunition being thrown out of a first-floor window.
Cannon had previously been convicted in the Superior Court of Hudson County of unlawful possession of a handgun, a felony punishable by more than one year in prison. His previous conviction made him a prohibited possessor of firearms, a charge that he pleaded guilty to in court.
The charges of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
Cannon, a Jersey City resident, pleaded guilty by videoconference before U.S. District Judge Katharine S. Hayden to an indictment charging him with illegal possession of a handgun and ammunition by a previously convicted felon. He is currently awaiting sentencing.
The investigation into the shooting was a joint effort between the FBI and the Jersey City Police Department, with the FBI’s special agents credited with the investigation leading to Cannon’s guilty plea.
