Aneva Gym Penalized for Deceptive Practices

New York Attorney General Letitia James has struck a blow against Aneva Gym in Long Island City, securing refunds and policy changes after the gym was accused of deceptive practices. The Attorney General’s Office (OAG) took legal action against Aneva Gym for violating state laws by failing to provide customers with written membership contracts and imposing illegal cancellation policies.

The lawsuit, filed in June 2025, alleged that Aneva Gym misled its members by requiring cancellations to be made in writing and in person, contrary to the law which allows for cancellations via various means including website, email, mail, or phone. The gym also demanded a 30-day notice for cancellation, whereas the law permits three business days after monthly renewal.

Attorney General James noted, “Aneva Gym misled its customers, causing many to keep paying for memberships they should have been able to easily cancel.” As part of the settlement, Aneva Gym is now required to change its cancellation policies to align with state law, offer restitution and refunds to affected members, and pay a $5,000 penalty.

The investigation revealed that Aneva Gym, established in 2022, also did not post the legally required $50,000 bond with the Department of State. The settlement now mandates compliance with New York’s Health Club Services law, including providing written contracts and updating cancellation policies to accommodate various methods of cancellation.

James advised consumers facing issues with gym memberships to file complaints online or call OAG’s hotline at (800) 771-7755. She also recommended that before joining a health club, consumers should verify the required financial security is in place. Aneva Gym has now posted the bond as part of the settlement.

Attorney General James’ efforts to protect New York consumers from misleading practices continue with this latest victory. In May 2025, she secured $600,000 for New Yorkers struggling to cancel Equinox memberships, and in December 2024, recovered over $4.8 million for customers improperly charged by SmileDirectClub.
