A Fairview man, Anthony Amoss, is facing serious consequences for his actions during Portland’s recent riots. According to court documents, Amoss, 33, has been charged by criminal complaint with three counts of destruction of government property.
The damage caused by Amoss and others during the riots was substantial, with over $164,000 in damage reported. On March 14, 2021, Amoss and others threw several objects at Hatfield Courthouse windows, causing more than $143,000 in damage. On March 20 and April 1, 2021, Amoss threw more than 40 objects at ICE Portland Field Office windows, causing more than $21,000 in damage.
Amoss made his initial appearance in federal court on June 2, 2021, before a U.S. Magistrate Judge and was released pending further court proceedings. Acting U.S. Attorney Scott Erik Asphaug of the District of Oregon made the announcement.
This case is being investigated by ICE and the Federal Protective Service and prosecuted by Gregory R. Nyhus, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.
A criminal complaint is only an accusation of a crime, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The charges against Amoss are serious, and the consequences of his actions could be severe. The exact outcome of this case will depend on the evidence presented and the decision of the court.
The people of Portland and the nation as a whole have the right to expect their government property to be protected from vandalism and destruction. The actions of Amoss and others during the riots were a clear violation of that expectation.
As this case moves forward, it will be interesting to see how the court handles the charges against Amoss and what the ultimate outcome will be.
