TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – A brazen thief has been brought to justice after stealing tens of thousands of dollars from a Department of Veterans Affairs program.
Anthony Brewer, 47, was sentenced to two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to theft of government property valued at over $50,000 in Department of Veterans Affairs funds.
The sentencing, announced by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, was the culmination of an investigation by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General, Criminal Investigations Division.
According to court documents, Brewer agreed to serve as a fiduciary under the Department of Veteran Affairs’ fiduciary program and manage the monetary benefits of an individual who was unable to manage their own benefits. However, he subsequently misused and stole funds provided by the VA for the beneficiary between October 7, 2020, and January 9, 2023.
Brewer was ordered to pay $53,567 in restitution and his sentence will run consecutive to a state of Florida prison sentence that he is currently serving.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida is committed to protecting the rights of military veterans and holding accountable those who abuse their trust.
Brewer’s sentence serves as a warning to anyone who would seek to exploit vulnerable individuals for personal gain.
The case is a reminder that the Department of Veterans Affairs is committed to ensuring that those who have served our country receive the support and benefits they deserve.
