A federal prison guard turned drug mule has been sentenced after smuggling marijuana into Estill Federal Correction Institution. Anthony Jermaine Creech, 39, of Varnville, South Carolina, stood before the court in Charleston and accepted responsibility for feeding the prison’s underground drug trade from the inside.
Creech, once trusted to uphold order behind bars, was sentenced by United States District Judge Richard M. Gergel to six months in federal prison, followed by six months of home confinement and one year of supervised release. The former correctional officer pled guilty to providing contraband to inmates, a betrayal that compromised the integrity of the federal prison system.
According to evidence presented during the change of plea hearing, on January 8, 2015, Creech used his position of authority to deliver one full ounce of marijuana to an inmate inside Estill F.C.I. The facility, designed to hold federal offenders, became a trafficking zone thanks to Creech’s willingness to exploit his badge for profit.
When confronted by federal investigators, Creech didn’t deny the charges. Instead, he admitted to smuggling not only marijuana but other contraband as well—all in exchange for cash. His confession laid bare a corrupt pipeline from the outside world directly into the hands of inmates, facilitated by a man sworn to prevent it.
The case was jointly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General, agencies that routinely target breaches of public trust within federal institutions. Their probe dismantled Creech’s illicit operation and exposed vulnerabilities in prison security protocols.
Assistant United States Attorney Nick Bianchi of the Charleston office prosecuted the case, ensuring that Creech faced consequences not just for breaking the law, but for violating the solemn duty of his position. The sentencing sends a message: even those hired to enforce the law will be held accountable when they become part of the criminal enterprise.
