Anthony Lutz, Unlawful Firearms Dealing, Albuquerque NM, 2024

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Anthony Lutz, 41, of Albuquerque, is facing federal charges after allegedly operating an illegal firearms business out of the city for over three years. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the indictment Tuesday, alleging Lutz engaged in the business of dealing firearms without the required federal license.

According to the indictment, the alleged scheme ran from approximately September 21, 2019, through August 4, 2023. Federal authorities have remained tight-lipped regarding the scale of Lutz’s operation, the types of firearms involved, or any potential connections to other criminal activity. The indictment itself offers little detail beyond the central charge of unlawful dealing.

U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico, Alexander M.M. Uballez, and Brendan Iber, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF’s Phoenix Field Division, jointly announced Lutz’s initial court appearance. Lutz was released on conditions pending trial, meaning he’s free for now, but faces a strict set of rules while awaiting prosecution. He’ll be back in court to answer the charges.

If convicted of unlawful dealing in firearms, Lutz faces a potential sentence of up to five years in federal prison. Following imprisonment, he could also be subject to up to three years of supervised release – a period of monitored freedom. The investigation was a collaborative effort, involving Homeland Security Investigations working alongside the ATF.

This case isn’t being handled in isolation. It’s part of a larger Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, a federal initiative designed to dismantle high-level criminal organizations. OCDETF focuses on intelligence-driven, multi-agency investigations aimed at disrupting the flow of illicit goods and cash.

While the indictment represents a significant step, it’s crucial to remember that it’s merely an allegation. Lutz is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico will be prosecuting the case, and the Grimy Times will continue to follow the developments as they unfold, bringing you the unvarnished truth from the streets and the courtrooms.
