NEWINGTON, Connecticut – A Newington couple has pleaded guilty to a large tax evasion scheme that resulted in a $2.9 million tax loss, according to court documents and statements made in court.

Anthony Niro, 60, and Nanette Niro, 59, both of Newington, pleaded guilty in Hartford federal court to one count of tax evasion. The scheme involved Anthony Niro’s business, A. Niro Landscape Contractors, Inc., which provided landscaping and snowplowing services for large commercial properties and personal residences.

Nanette Niro, who was the bookkeeper for the business, maintained the company’s financial records and conspired with her husband and business partner to evade both corporate and individual income tax. The couple failed to report nearly $14 million in the business’s gross receipts for the 2006 through 2010 tax years, resulting in a tax loss of $2,931,011.

In addition to the tax evasion scheme, Anthony and Nanette Niro also failed to report $8,022,644.90 in income earned from rental properties owned by the couple and their business partner. This resulted in a tax loss of $1,472,735.

The couple’s scheme was uncovered by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher W. Schmeisser.

Anthony Niro pleaded guilty on January 4, 2024, and Nanette Niro pleaded guilty on the same date. At sentencing, both defendants face a maximum term of imprisonment of five years.

The couple has already paid restitution of $1,472,735 and are still required to pay substantial financial penalties and interest.
