Antonio Soria-Arellano, Alien in Possession of Firearm, California 2017

FRESNO, Calif. – A shocking arrest in Madera County has led to a 2-year prison sentence for a Mexico citizen who was found in possession of a firearm.

On February 23, 2017, Antonio Soria-Arellano, 44, was discovered at an indoor marijuana cultivation operation in a residence in Madera County. Soria, the sole occupant of the residence, was found in possession of a loaded Remington 870 Express, 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition, according to court documents.

Law enforcement officers from the Madera County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) were involved in the case. The Merced County District Attorney’s Office also assisted in the investigation.

The loaded shotgun and ammunition were seized by law enforcement during the raid on the indoor marijuana operation, which led to Soria’s arrest. Soria later pleaded guilty to being an alien in possession of a firearm on April 17, 2017.

U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced Soria’s 2-year prison sentence, which was handed down by the court. Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen A. Escobar prosecuted the case.

Soria’s case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of possessing a firearm as an undocumented immigrant. The charges against Soria demonstrate the serious consequences of breaking the law, especially when it comes to firearms.

The investigation into Soria’s activities was a joint effort between multiple agencies, including HSI, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, and the Merced County District Attorney’s Office.
