Methamphetamine trafficking has once again led to a lengthy federal prison sentence for a Sioux Falls, South Dakota, man. Apiemi Kebaso, Jr., age 31, was sentenced to 120 months in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on August 31, 2020, after Kebaso pleaded guilty to Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance on June 15, 2020. The conviction stems from an incident on or about March 19, 2018, when Kebaso knowingly and intentionally possessed with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine (actual) in the District of South Dakota.

On that date, Kebaso had in his possession 150.1 grams of methamphetamine, which was 97 percent pure, resulting in him possessing 145.5 grams of pure methamphetamine. Kebaso intended to distribute some or all of this methamphetamine to others, highlighting the severity of the crime and the need for strong law enforcement action.

The investigation that led to Kebaso’s conviction was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer D. Mammenga prosecuted the case, ensuring that justice was served and that those responsible for methamphetamine trafficking are held accountable.

Kebaso was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat methamphetamine trafficking and the importance of cooperation between federal and local authorities.

United States Attorney Ron Parsons announced the sentencing, highlighting the commitment of the Department of Justice to addressing the scourge of methamphetamine trafficking in South Dakota and across the country. The sentence of 120 months in federal prison, combined with the special assessment and supervised release, demonstrates the serious consequences that await those who engage in this type of criminal activity.

The conviction and sentencing of Apiemi Kebaso, Jr., also underscore the importance of the work of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force in investigating and disrupting methamphetamine trafficking operations. As the war on drugs continues, it is clear that law enforcement agencies will remain vigilant and proactive in their efforts to protect communities and bring perpetrators to justice.
