A brazen daylight robbery in the heart of Philadelphia’s Center City has led to the indictment of 59-year-old Stephen Arellano, who has been charged with one count of bank robbery, announced Acting United States Attorney Louis D. Lappen.
The indictment, which was handed down yesterday, alleges that Arellano robbed the Republic Bank located at 1601 Market Street in Philadelphia on November 16, 2016. According to the indictment, Arellano made off with approximately $860 in U.S. currency from the victim teller.
The investigation into the robbery was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Philadelphia Police Department. The case has been assigned to Assistant United States Attorney Eric A. Boden, who will be prosecuting Arellano.
If convicted, Arellano faces a maximum possible sentence of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, three years’ supervised release, and a $100 special assessment. The penalties for bank robbery are severe, reflecting the serious nature of the crime and the potential harm it can cause to individuals and the community.
It’s worth noting that an indictment is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. However, the fact that Arellano has been charged with this serious crime suggests that the authorities have gathered significant evidence against him.
The bank robbery is a disturbing reminder of the ongoing problem of financial crime in Philadelphia and beyond. As law enforcement agencies continue to work to combat these types of crimes, it’s clear that the public must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
In recent years, there have been numerous high-profile bank robberies in the Philadelphia area, highlighting the need for increased security measures and cooperation between law enforcement agencies. The arrest and indictment of Stephen Arellano is a positive step towards addressing this issue, but more work needs to be done to prevent these types of crimes from occurring in the future.
